What is UTMA (Ultra Thin Multi Access) Technology?
UTMA (Ultra Thin Multi Access) is the terminology for the NComputing package of technologies. The company products are "Ultra Thin" compared to traditional thin client terminals in terms of size and cost. They also provide users "multiple access" points for one PC. The UTMA technology enables NComputing to provide the world's first terminal unit that does not require a CPU, hard-drive, or CD-ROM yet executes as if it is an ordinary Windows PC. With this technology, a user can expand an existing PC and network up to 10 (or more, set by Ncomputing) network PC terminals easily and cost effectively.
There are four core technology pieces to NComputing UTMA Technology:
1) NComputing Terminal Server : NComputing has developed its own terminal server software, which is installed on top of the Microsoft Windows Operating System or Linux to allow remote users to access their host PC remotely through a company standard TCP/IP network environment. Terminal Server transmits and handles the desktop display and remote input activity from the client keyboard and mouse. Only a few companies had developed Terminal Server technology running on Windows such as Microsoft, Citrix. NComputing has strong intellectual properties regarding on this area and recently acquire hydrapark GmbH, a leader of multi-user remote computing to extend its depth.
2) Unique Windows Over IP (WoIP?) Protocol: NComputing has developed an intelligent protocol that resides in a software layer outside of the Microsoft Operating System on the host PC that communicates instructions between the NComputing Terminal Server and the UTMA terminal hardware. NComputing also has the compatibility to work under the current Microsoft Terminal Server and use its RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) to support traditional thin-client terminal compatibility. NComputing's LoIP (Linux over IP) is sub-part of WoIP to allow to communicate with Linux based host PC and it is faster than VNC and other competitor's terminal protocol.
3) SoC Chip Architecture: NComputing has developed unique, very low cost chip architecture for its UTMA devices. The programmable logic chip (FPGA) with less than 6,000 logic elements (LE) s only can implement multiple functions that are normally provided by an x86 CPU processor. By providing terminal service and server based computing processes, the NComputing terminal does not require a traditional x86 CPU and other chipsets, but only a small matching SoC chip we had designed. No one can emulate the patented NComputing SoC chip design, which is the key to creating an ultra thin client device with no CPU. NComputing plans to upgrade this design with a new proprietary ASIC chip to reduce cost by consolidating its size and other memory components.
4) Terminal Hardware Design: NComputing has a low cost hardware solution to produce the physical UTMA client device, SoC chip, motherboard components, and ports for USB, keyboard, mouse and other connections. NComputing has the capability to self-produce its own product or to perform the necessary non-recurring engineering services to OEM partners so they can distribute their own version of the NComputing UTMA devices. Today, the company made 5 different types of board for several key OEM customers project.
